Little Miss Red and I are safe, healthy, and hunkered down alongside a mountain lake, on the Colorado. Continental Divide The afternoon wind has picked up, causing pine boughs to dance and the ripples in the lake water to glisten. Paddle boarding will have to wait, but not the Get Well America Tour. It is alive and well, spreading and promoting the healing power of kindness while our country struggles with its footing.
What a whirlwind the past six weeks had been. Six weeks ago I was coming off my first live radio interview in Biloxi, MS while waiting to hear about a possible story for a TV station in Tampa. The Get Well America Tour was entering a new phase - well, almost.
Fat Tuesday has come and gone and with it my very first Mardi Gras experience. Parades, costumes, beads, feathers and the most wonderful and outrageous costumes abound. And talk about nice, kind people--- they were everywhere.
Being from the northern states, I had no clue how big this holiday is in the Gulf region. I first got a glimpse of this a couple of weeks ago in Galveston, Texas where I was fascinated by all of the purple, green and gold decorations adorning homes and businesses. It turns out that this is serious business.
Then there is Lake Charles, Louisiana, which proudly boast is place as second only to New Orleans in the number of Krewe Clubs - each creating elaborate parades and even balls. I visited a museum there that had room after room of elaborate costumes.
Two friends from college live in New Orleans and my travels landed me at their doorstep the day before Fat Tuesday. Talk about lucky! They showed me the best time, a parade in the morning and the French Quarter – yes even Bourbon Street in the afternoon. I will let the pictures tell you the rest!
